He's back...   2007-09-18 00:00:00

... and kicking bottom.

Well then boys and girls, did you miss me? ... No? ... You didn't even notice the site was gone? Well, I do have a grand total of about 2 visitors, so it's hardly surprising. Oh well, never mind.

Anyway, I've been doing Stuff™ to the site; and as we all know, Stuff is Good®. I have a new hosting provider, comment counts for posts on the front page, an archive page, and a tweaked menu & footer. Still jam-packed with all the usual valid XHTML 1.0 goodness.

I don't yet have a child, but that is going to change in the frighteningly near future. Anne and I haven't been able to find out the baby's sex, and have been having a little trouble trying to decide upon names, especially for boys - suggestions welcome! We do however have what I suppose would technically be termed a nursery, replete with Moses basket, cot, vibrating bouncer, rocking chair (with matching rocking footstool, natch), and approximately 1.4 billion bibs and baby-grows. Anne is rather large. It's all quite scary.

Hosting providers who provide shell access are a very, very good thing. I can, like, install CPAN modules and stuff. Without resorting to writing a CGI script to run the install process. I can also organise the site and its subdomains how I initially wanted to: watch in wonder as you visit webtoys and don't get redirected to some hideous, hackish URL under the parent site! Watch in even more wonder as you realise the single currently-existing webtoy doesn't work any more, because my new host have turned off url_fopen in PHP and I'm lazy!! Take my word for it (erm.. in wonder!) when I tell you that being able to update a site via "git push" is infinitely faster, simpler and more reliable than a crappy hacked-up custom FTP sync script!!!!1

</nerdgasm>

Anyway, now that it isn't such a complete pain in the arse to maintain and update, things might actually happen around here. Or a certain little forthcoming creature may scupper that idea mightily. We'll see.

Let's see if comments work.

... Cool. :)

I can sympathise with the shell access malarky - I've been given the task of implementing OpenSSH onto our test system, with a mind to putting it on our webservers (hurray!). What that you say !! Easy ?? Except these are Windows 2003 machines... (Someone set me up the bomb !!)

Weren't you getting a "git fear" from work previously?

Additionally: William, Joseph, and Ford... Maybe not Ford.

William's not too bad, just not something I can realistically see myself calling a child. We can't have Joseph or Joshua, partly because Anne's friend Nina already has them, and partly because so does everybody else these days, it seems (Joshua seems particularly popular). All we can currently vaguely decide upon for a boy is Sam - but then I have a cousin Sam who can't be more than 3 by now (yes, I have no memory) and think it would be a bit cheeky.

My own suggestions of Harold, Gerald and Billfred didn't go down too well. I don't actually have anything in the way of serious ones. :|

Anyway, yes, I was indeed getting the fear from git, but I have a better grasp of its workings now, and am actually rather impressed by it in some respects. Except for branches. When we start doing "incremental updates" we'll have branches all over the place, and I'm sure the mistrust and confusion shall all come flooding back.

"Ace" Allison, pffft! Alan Allison?

Speaking of which, are you creating posh double-barreled progeny?

Phil, asking us for name suggestions is asking for trouble. You'll only get answers like Quentin and Archibald.

Anyway, there's a link on my site to a picture of a man holding a child. I assume this is you and yours? Crazy stuff.

Ooh, how about Isambard?

Let's see if the new "friendly name" stuff works.
